I have the honour to acknoʻledge
the receipt of your despatch No.229 of the 13th.of July
asking for an expression of my viers on the subject of
accepting Lord Morley's Award as a besis of apportion-
ment of the cost of the Eastern Mail Service.
2. In reply I have the honour to state that
on behalf of this Colony I object to Lord Morley's Award
A, or the ground that the sum of £85 proposed to be re-
garded as the cost of the Australian Service is too am 11.
As regards arerd B, I am strongly of
opinion that the subsidised Mail Service should terminate
at longKong for the reasons stated in the 4th. paragraph
of my despatch No.366 of the 10th.ultimo.

As to award D,I object as above stated
to the Service being extended beyond this Colony, and I
agree in the opinion expressed in Sir W.Robinson's des-
patch No.142 of the 30th.July, 1897 that the mileage bas-
:is for division of the subsidy is unfair to this Colony.

the local Chamber of Commerce, copy of a letter from which body on the general question of this Colony's share of
